Hello! My name is Sophia and I am a Brown University graduate with a B.A. in American/Ethnic Studies and a B.A. in Visual Arts. I have been working as an educator for over 8 years, in various professional and volunteer settings. In high school, I worked with adults in our local English-second-language program, elementary school students in math and writing, and middle school students in classical flute. In college, I developed and taught a four-week arts curriculum for middle schoolers in a Providence school district, taught swim lessons to students ranging from 3 years old up to teenagers, worked in a mentor setting in the Brown University painting studio, and most relevantly, worked as a college essay and admissions tutor.
I love teaching about the college admissions process and essay writing. I have a comprehensive understanding of how to craft a successful application that exhibits my students’ specific and unique personal voices. I understand firsthand how difficult the college admissions process can be, and my tutoring approach is incredibly supportive. I have a good understanding of how to write an essay that amplifies my students’ stories in compelling and inspiring ways. I have supported students with essays for all of the following schools (to name a few): MIT, Princeton, Harvard, Duke, Georgetown, UC Berkeley, and UCLA.
As for my hobbies and interests, I love to read, especially contemporary literary fiction and nonfiction critical theory! I also love visiting different arts and cultural institutions. My favorite exhibitions have been the Suzanne Jackson retrospective at SFMOMA, the Ruth Asawa retrospective at the MOMA, and Wayamou: Lenguas de lo Común at El Museo Tamayo in Mexico City. I am an interdisciplinary artist based in New York City, working in oil painting, ceramics, and installation, so I have been weaving stories and narratives through many different avenues my whole life.
