Hey, I’m Lavon! I’m a graduate of Harvard University in Applied Math (AB/SM), and I love math and tech. My focus has, for the past few years, been on both machine learning/AI and thinking about how machines learn. I’ve conducted research in scene graph generation, LLM learning potential, and climate models for human economic outcomes. This both informs how we interact with machines and how we think about human learning, too! That last part has been integral to how I teach, and I often think about how AI can reframe problems and solutions in ways students of different learning modes can all succeed with.
I’ve been teaching for the past 6 years now, and my favorite part of it is finding a way of explaining a concept to a student such that they fully internalize the concept. There is always a gratifying “OHHH” or facial expression that shows the student understands, and that makes me most excited about teaching.
The subjects I tutor include the following: test prep (SAT, SHSAT), AP Calculus AB/BC, all math classes (except AP Stats), up to high school physics, and computer science (including AP Computer Science A and Principles). Outside of tutoring, I am an avid chess player, and I like to read books, cook, fence (epee), rock climb, hit the gym, and watch basketball (Nets all day!).
My goal as a tutor is to help students become better problem solvers, understand and use the modern tools we are being introduced to with integrity and curiosity, and inspire a love of math and tech!
