Hello! My name is Sahana, and I’m an undergraduate at UC Berkeley. Math was my favorite subject in high school, so I joined the CalTeach program here at Berkeley so that I could graduate with a credential and become a high school teacher. I’ve been teaching ever since I learned to talk, but officially I’ve been tutoring since freshman year of high school. I have tutored a wide range of subjects, including SAT Math, AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, AP Precalculus, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Integrated Math 1, 2, and 3. My favorite type of math is Algebra because I love canceling things out!
As a teacher, it’s this knack for learning that helped me succeed—at Mathnasium, where I was hired as an instructor; at Color Guard practice, where I taught a newbie a toss I’d struggled with before; at home, where I helped my friends with Calculus over the phone; and at Sign With Us, the club I founded, where I overcame my anxiety and learned to command a classroom of 25. I believe what makes a skilled teacher isn’t their students’ grades, but a willingness and passion to learn. After all, teaching is learning—how to connect with a student, how to make things make sense, and how to adapt to students’ individual needs. I’ve decided to pursue a career in education because I believe my talent at learning will help me grow into a talented teacher.
Outside of math and teaching, I also really enjoy learning languages. I know how to read and write six different scripts: Devanagari, Tamil, Hiragana, Katakana, Latin (English), and my own script that I created for my diary. My passion for languages led me to double major in Linguistics and minor in French.
My dream is to take a class on conlangs (constructed languages) and create one of my own someday!
