SPANISH TUTORING

Since 2005, we’ve helped students improve their confidence and grades in Spanish.

We’re especially proud of the fact that other educators (teachers and professors) and high profile members of the Princeton University Administration trust us with their children’s academic success and recommend our services to others.

We have a 15+ year track record of supporting students in elementary/middle school Spanish & high school Spanish (e.g. regular Spanish, Honors Spanish, AP Spanish, SAT Spanish Subject Test).

Our private 1-on-1 tutors are native Spanish speakers or have studied in Spanish-speaking countries. They have lived and researched in the jungles of Costa Rica and have won multiple Spanish awards.

WORK WITH A SPANISH EXPERT

Hi, I’m Daniela.

What parents say about our Spanish tutors

Our team includes award-winning Princeton University undergrads and Master’s/PhD graduates who are rigorously screened and are extremely effective at communicating the material.

A brief “case study”:

The mother of an 11th grader at Princeton Day School contacted us help her daughter improve with Spanish.

She struggled with the end of Spanish 2 and requested a tutor to help review Spanish 2 as well as prepare for Spanish 3. The family had previously used another service but did not see any results in her grades.

We matched the daughter with Daniela, a politics major at Princeton University who is fluent in both Spanish and French and scored an 800 on the SAT Spanish Subject test.

After several months together, the family wrote to us:

“Daniela is terrific. We hope to continue with her through the school year.”

We receive messages like this every week.

We regularly track progress

Progress reports are shared after every session so you always know what’s going on.

A Real-Life Example:

Student: Marcus
Tutor: Katherine
Subject(s): Spanish
Date: 4/16
Time Tutored: 14:00 – 15:00
Next Scheduled Session: Thu, 04/23 2:00 PM (Online)

Material Covered:

To begin our session, I gave Marcus a quiz on his assigned vocabulary homework. Marcus was able to successfully translate the verbs, but had some difficulty conjugating in past preterite tense. I created a vocabulary reference sheet for Marcus to have on hand and it includes all of the English translations and conjugations of each assigned vocab word in present, preterite, and imperfect tenses. This will be useful for Marcus in class.

Next, I held a lesson on “por” versus “para”. This is a very important lesson in the Spanish language as the two prepositions are often confused. Marcus just so happens to be learning the difference between the two in class right now and he expressed that his teacher only went over a couple points about them. I created an introduction sheet that outlines everything Marcus should know about “por” versus “para”. These two prepositions have the same English translation of “for” but cannot be used interchangeably. I drew a diagram and created a visual way for Marcus to remember the rules for usage. Together we went over applications in writing and speech, and I provided Marcus with sentence examples for each rule. I sent Marcus this reference sheet and I believe it will be very helpful to him during this unit in class. By creating a visual diagram and separating the rules and uses into columns, Marcus can easily identify when to use which word.

Lastly, I had Marcus do a timed writing exercise. I gave Marcus 10 minutes to write a 6 sentence paragraph using the vocabulary from homework, conjugating verb tenses, and correctly applying the rules of “por” versus “para”. Marcus did an excellent job writing complex sentences and correctly used “por” and “para” in each sentence. He struggled a bit with how to refer to specific nouns, so we went over that vocabulary together and I gave him examples of how he can structure his sentences to convey the same meaning.

LEARN HOW WE CAN HELP

Addresses common student issues

A deep understanding of the subject matter allows us to personalize our approach.

Why is Spanish important?

Many students come to us for support with Spanish classes, AP Spanish, Spanish SAT Subject tests, or simply for enrichment.

Why do some students struggle with Spanish?

Compared to many other languages, Spanish pronunciation is not too difficult for English speakers. It also has consistent and straightforward grammar rules, and, due to a shared alphabet and phonetic spelling, is relatively easy to read and write. Nonetheless, the language has some unique properties that can make it a challenge for some students.

For one thing, Spanish verb tenses can be tricky to master. It’s common for learners to use the wrong one – as in “She has a swim” instead of “She’s having a swim.” Spanish is also a more heavily inflected language than English, which means that the endings of words often change according to context. And, Spanish “sounds” very fast to non-native ears, which can make listening comprehension difficult.

One of the best ways to improve speaking ability is to…practice speaking! However, many students don’t have much opportunity to speak Spanish outside of the classroom. And when they do, they may be hesitant to do so for fear of making grammatical mistakes or mispronouncing words.

Tutoring in a one-on-one setting puts the student at ease and facilitates more conversation. Students are encouraged to speak and to make mistakes. If possible, we like to conduct tutoring sessions entirely in Spanish.
