WORK WITH AN ENGLISH EXPERT

Hi, I’m Daniel.

What parents say about our English tutors

Our team includes award-winning Princeton University undergrads and Master’s/PhD graduates who are rigorously screened and are extremely effective at communicating the material.

A quick “case study”:

The parent of an 11th grader contacted us help her son improve his analytical essay skills for English and history classes. He specifically had trouble formulating clear theses and organizing his thoughts.

Our general goals were to improve his writing skills and increase his confidence.

We matched the son with Daniel, a philosophy and neuroscience major at Princeton University, and aspiring professor.

Here are two messages we received over the course of their work together:

“I am so very pleased with the work you are doing with Colin! Have sent some folks your way. Thanks.”

“Thanks Daniel. I was talking with the WWP English supervisor for grades 6 to 12 and told her what a super job you were doing with Colin.

Your teaching techniques are better than most of the English teachers he has encountered over the past years. This is really true! You would make a good professor!”

We receive messages like these every week.

We regularly track progress

Progress reports are shared after every session so you always know what’s going on.

A Real-Life Example:

Student: Vasya
Tutor: Lauren
Subject(s): English
Date: 11/20
Time Tutored: 11:00 – 12:00
Next Scheduled Session: Tue, 11/29 5:30 PM

Material Covered:

The work Vasya and I did today focused on grammar and on incorporating information from texts.

In grammar, we talked about adverbs, appositives, and appositive phrases. We looked at combining a variety of techniques to determine adverbs (memorizing common adverbs + looking for what the word modified + asking questions about when/where/to what extent, etc.)

On the issue of incorporating information from texts, I would like Vasya to write an essay this week about Grace Kelly. We decided on an historical expository paper because that genre requires plenty of external sources and information, but does not need a deep theoretical background. We practiced with a quote from this New York Times article, specifically focusing on minimizing the amount of the quote she used, as well as incorporating the quote with correct punctuation.

Additional Comments:

Since this weekend is Thanksgiving, we’re tentatively planning to meet next on Tuesday, November 29.

LEARN HOW WE CAN HELP

Addresses common student issues

A deep understanding of the subject matter allows us to personalize our approach.

Why is English important?

The ability to understand what you’re reading and the ability to write well are essential core skills that are necessary in all subjects.

Why do some students struggle with English?

Students struggle with reading comprehension and writing for a number of reasons. These might include inherent aptitude, attitude, or the quality of one’s teachers. In particular, students who do not read frequently are at a disadvantage.

As our students spend more of their time in the online world, you might think all that typing and texting would lead to improved writing abilities.

However, academic writing entails a certain set of expectations regarding format, approach, ways of backing up what you say, etc. that must be learned. Our tutors can help.
